Business insurance, explained.
What’s the difference between business insurance and a BOP?
Business insurance is an umbrella term for several types of protection. A business owners policy (BOP) packages general liability and commercial property coverage, often with business interruption coverage. Eligibility and policy terms vary; workers’ comp and commercial auto are generally separate.
Do contractors need more than general liability?
Often, yes. Depending on your work, you may also need workers’ compensation, commercial auto, equipment coverage, builders risk, or surety bonds. Contract requirements and the details of your operations help shape the right conversation.
What information should I have ready for a coverage review?
Bring a description of your work, business location, annual revenue, payroll, employee count, vehicles, and property or equipment values. Current policies, claims history, and insurance requirements in contracts are also helpful.
Is a surety bond the same as insurance?
No. A surety bond involves three parties and guarantees an obligation to the party requiring the bond. If a surety pays a valid claim, the bonded business may have to reimburse it under an indemnity agreement. Approval depends on underwriting.
Can I purchase or bind coverage on this website?
This website is an introduction to coverage options. The coverage planner creates a checklist you can download and share with your advisor; it does not submit a quote request or bind insurance. Coverage requires carrier underwriting and confirmation.
